If we are to teach real peace in this world, and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with the children.

A social and Emotional curriculum

"Pax" meaning "peace" in Latin is the ultimate goal of this yearlong, comprehensive curriculum.  Designed for elementary age children, it teaches them to make positive choices with the following objectives and goals in mind:

Students will learn and practice each day how to care for (love) and respect:

• Their inherently precious selves,

• Others, including those who are different than themselves,

• All the while preserving and healing the natural environment that sustains us all.

In order to create a more peaceful classroom environment, and by extension, a more peaceful world.

Children who:

• See themselves as lovable and capable excel at learning and at life.

• Practice understanding, empathy, compassion and ultimately love, touch others in a truly human way.

• Come to embrace and value nature, recognize it as the home planet to us all.

The author, Paul r bareis

Designed and written by a master teacher, this curriculum responds to many of the needs and questions that the author observed and heard from children over his 25+ years in the classroom.  By consistently using this curriculum in his own classroom, he not only created a community where there was much less physical and emotional violence, but one where the students treated each other with kindness and respect; a joyful community!

We are very happy to know that you are creating these invaluable lessons in the classroom for the children. It’s like a pebble in a pond, spreading the ripples of compassion towards all of humanity by each child’s learning as they grow and exert their influence on the world.
— Warmly, Dianne (a parent)

Contents

This curriculum is made up of approximately 133 lessons that correspond to the calendar school year.  Also included are posters that can be posted to strike the student's imagination, used to get them thinking about the topic and/or can be colored in.  Finally, and very importantly, are the included homework sheets.  Not only will these reinforce the skills and concepts at home, but will also educate the parents/family on these important topics.

Team building occurs as the participants experience many of the lessons!

Workshops

While The Pax Curriculum is written in an easy to follow format (see the preview above) a half or full day workshop can get the faculty excited about the concept of peacemaking, help them feel more confident in the use of the curriculum and even serve as a team building activity for them!  In the past, I've presented at eight regional or national American Montessori Society conferences and have been a presenter/teacher trainer at the Montessori Education Center of the Rockies.  My workshops and teaching is always highly rated.

A vision for the future

We have the power to alter the world that we live in.  The choices we make today will affect our children and our children's children.  The vision is to create a peace school, no, actually a network of such schools that span our world spreading the reality of peace.  Interested in making a REAL difference?  Please contact me.

Envision a school where:

Montessori: Hands-on, experiential, child-centered and individualized education

Peace: Social and emotional learning where students learn how to love and respect oneself, others, and the natural environment. This is in order to proactively create a more peaceful classroom community, and by extension, a more peaceful world. Said another way, “Children who:

  • See themselves as lovable and capable excel at learning and at life.

  • Practice understanding, empathy, compassion and ultimately love, touch others in a truly human way.

  • Come to embrace and value nature, recognize it as the home planet to us all.”

Academy: A world-class school that strives to strike the imagination of its students resulting in lifelong learners, who love learning for learning’s sake.

of

Colorado: My home state, but could be any state in the union, or world.

My classroom at the Montessori School of Denver was proof that such a peaceful, learning environment can be created.
